Breast Ultrasound
MRBCC is a certified breast ultrasound provider with experienced ultrasound technologists. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to record an image on a special screen. Radiologist can distinguish fluid-filled cysts from solid masses with 98-100% accuracy. After placing gel on your breast to help transmit sound waves, the technologist moves a transducer (the instrument that produces the sound waves) across the breast to produce a picture of the breast tissue on a screen. These pictures are copied to film so that a record can be kept.
The American College of Radiology states that whole breast ultrasound is NOT the standard of care for a breast screening tool. Studies have shown that mammography is the best tool for screening for breast cancer. The only indications for a breast ultrasound are a palpable abnormality or to further evaluate an abnormality on a mammogram.
An ultrasound takes approximately 15 minutes. There is usually no discomfort during this exam.
