Discharge from the NICU
Planning for discharge is an ongoing process that begins when your baby is
admitted. It is important for you as parents to be involved in this process, which gradually prepares you to care for your baby at home. Your baby will not be discharged from the unit until you are prepared and comfortable to assume care of him or her at home.
1) Discharge Class
The NICU offers classes to help you learn to care for your infant and prepare you for taking your baby home. The class offers infant CPR instruction, practice of these skills and information on discharge procedures. The discharge coordinator will contact you to help arrange for teaching.
2) Parent Rooms
Parent rooms are available for you and your baby to stay in as your baby gets closer to discharge. You will be able to stay overnight with your baby and do all of his/her care to help you feel more comfortable caring for your baby at home.
3) Newborn Follow-up Clinic
If you baby qualifies for Newborn Follow-up Clinic you will be given a letter describing the clinic. You will also receive an appointment for follow-up in the clinic. At this appointment your baby will be examined by an occupational therapist, a speech therapist, and a nurse to determine how well s/he is developing. If you suspect a developmental delay in your child at any time, feel free to call the clinic at (574) 647-3571 or (574) 647-3573 to discuss your concerns.
