Robotic Surgery Leader

Memorial’s da Vinci surgical program, which began in early 2007, recently underwent a major expansion that positions Memorial as the da Vinci surgical leader across Northern Indiana and among the top programs in the state. Memorial's existing da Vinci robot was replaced and a second one was added, both of which are the most advanced da Vinci robots on the market today. As the most experienced da Vinci site in the region, surgeons have performed hundreds of surgeries, and the interest in the da Vinci only continues to grow. In fact, da Vinci has quickly become a popular surgical approach for many across the United States. There were 205,000 da Vinci procedures performed in 2009, up 51 percent from 2008.

Leading the Way

Memorial leaders understand the difference cutting-edge medical equipment can make in the lives of their patients.

“Offering the most advanced surgical technology demonstrates our commitment to providing patients with world-class health care. By placing the da Vinci in the highly capable hands of our surgical and clinical staff, we are not only transforming the quality of peoples’ lives, but we are also saving lives,” says Memorial Hospital President and CEO Philip A. Newbold.

“Patients undergoing da Vinci surgery seem to experience less pain than a typical surgery. As a result of the growing number of positive patient outcomes connected with the da Vinci, people feel more confident approaching surgery today,” says Jayne Mitton, executive director Surgical and Trauma Services at Memorial Hospital.
