A hereditary disease which can be misdiagnosed as COPD or asthma with minimal response to therapies. People with AATD are born with low levels of a blood protein called AAT or alpha1-proteinase inhibitor (A1-P1). This protein (which is made in the liver) helps protect lung tissue from damage from enzymes that are released by white blood cells.
