Memorial Unveils New MedFlight Helicopter

Lifesaving care expands for critically ill patients

South Bend, Ind.— Beacon Health System’s Memorial Hospital has received a new MedFlight helicopter that became operational June 1. The new Eurocopter EC145 replaces the original helicopter that was in operation since 2006 and conducted more than 1,600 transports.

The new aircraft will improve and expand patient care capabilities by increasing MedFlight’s range and service area, allowing it to better serve the critical care transport needs of northern Indiana and southern Michigan.

“The new helicopter provides the crew the latest technology in communication and safety capabilities,” says MedFlight Program Manager Rodney Logan, R.N., BSN, CMTE. A spacious cabin accommodates a variety of critical care transport medical equipment and provides head-to-toe patient access; a larger fuel capacity allows it to travel farther distances, and more powerful engines allow it to carry more weight. The aircraft size and lift capabilities will also allow future incorporation of a transport incubator for neonatal patients.

Memorial MedFlight and its highly trained critical care transport specialists are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to respond quickly and transport critically ill or injured patients, for on-scene responses or inter-facility transports.

Among the state-of-the-art features is the real-time weather radar that helps the flight crew detect storm cells, lightning and high winds. MedFlight’s new helicopter is Instrument Flight Rule (IFR) capable, which will enable it to operate in a wider range of weather conditions.
