Mini-Medical School for Teens Eye dissections, innovation presentations, and graduation

Memorial Hospital’s Ambassador and Customer Service Department’s Mini-Medical School, a program for students aged 15-18 interested in medical careers, begins this week. Now in its third year, this action-packed week includes lectures and demonstrations by clinicians, hands-on labs, and an opportunity to shadow hospital personnel. There are three separate sessions, each of which last from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

The program offers students an opportunity to explore the field of health care prior to beginning their college programs. While there is a cost to attend the program, there are a limited number of scholarships available to participants. Successful completion of the program may also qualify a student to become part of the Memorial Junior Ambassadors, should he or she choose to apply.

Some of the highlights of the first session include a heart dissection by James Kelly, M.D., eye dissection by Eric Y. Yoon, M.D., tours of Memorial MedFlight, student presentations to Kreg Gruber, COO of Memorial Health System, and a presentation on innovation practices by Memorial Health System CEO Phil Newbold. The event is concluded with a graduation ceremony on Friday night.

While the 2011 sessions are filled, contact the office of Ambassador and Customer Services at 574-647-6495 with any questions or to have your name placed on the waiting list to receive the information about the 2012 sessions first.
