Memorial Health System Board votes to approve affiliation with Elkhart General Health System
Today the Board of Directors of Memorial Health System voted to approve the formation of a new company in order to combine the operations of Memorial Hospital of South Bend and Memorial Health System with Elkhart General Health System. This historic affiliation comes after years of successful collaboration between the two organizations and as a proactive response to dramatic changes pending in the health care industry around health care reform.
The founders of Memorial Hospital of South Bend in 1894 were driven to reach out and enrich our community to offer much needed medical services. Today’s decision honors the original mission by extending the reach and impact two strong organizations can have when they come together as one.
The affiliation of Elkhart and Memorial will lead to the establishment of a new parent company which will be named and staff will be appointed in the coming months. This exciting step toward a strong and vital future for locally governed medical care could not have been accomplished without the passionate dedication shown by the community board members from both Memorial and Elkhart. Their commitment to solid fact finding, thoughtful strategy review and community benefit resulted in an agreement that seeks to protect current health care resources while pursuing many areas of growth. As the nation continues to struggle with the best way to respond to weak economies and greater than ever demands for medical care, our region is now well positioned for reliable, community driven and innovative responses.
