Going for the …gold? B.A.B.E’s annual luncheon features notable diaperers

The 11th Annual Beds and Britches, Etc. (B.A.B.E.) Program luncheon will be on Thursday, June 16, from 11:20 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Saint Mary’s College’s Noble Family Dining Hall. Admission is $25 and tickets can be purchased by calling 574-647-2220.

B.A.B.E. program offers incentives to expectant mothers and parents to encourage responsible parenting. B.A.B.E.’s unique “store” offers new and used baby clothing and equipment. Parents can earn coupons to the store by keeping prenatal appointments, attending parenting classes, taking their child(ren) to be immunized, and a number of other activities that promote family health and child development.

B.A.B.E. is the result of work of multiple community organizations and individuals, including Memorial Health System. Therefore, the competing Dirty Dozen at this year’s event includes representatives from organizations across the community. The Memorial Hospital Chief Operating Officer Kreg Gruber and Associate Director of Memorial Family Residency Program Rob Riley, M.D. will be joined by:

  • Pete Buttigieg, mayoral candidate
  • Wayne Curry, mayoral candidate
  • Bruce Greenburg, president and CEO of Family Children’s Center
  • Maestro Tsung Ye, South Bend Symphony
  • Dr. David Visser, the “Pet Vet”
  • Sr. Laureen Painter, FACHE, VP of mission integration & outreach services at St.Joseph Regional Medical Center.
  • Traci Cappelman, Fox 28 news anchor
  • Keitha Nelson, ABC 57 news anchor
  • Waldo Mikels-Carrasco, Institute for Latin Studies at the University of Notre Dame.

The Master of Ceremonies is Trisha Sloma, WNDU news anchor, and the referee is Peter Byrne, the sports director at WSBT. Byrne will oversee the Dirty Dozen’s competition for best diaperer of the Baby Alive baby models, a highly sought-after title.
