Elkhart and Memorial Hospitals Announce Name of New Parent Organization

Elkhart General Hospital & Memorial Hospital of South Bend

Beacon Health System: Lighting the Way to Wellness

Beacon Health System has been chosen as the new name for the parent structure combining Elkhart General Hospital and Memorial Hospital of South Bend. The Beacon Health System brand will encircle the existing brands of both hospitals, physician practices, home care companies, urgent care centers, and fitness and wellness programs.

The naming process involved input from Board Members from Elkhart and Memorial and took six months to complete. The two organizations officially affiliated on November 23, 2011.
The names of the two hospitals will remain the same in order to honor the well-respected and recognizable legacy brands of both Elkhart General Hospital and Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

“Elkhart General and Memorial share a successful history of partnering on clinical and administrative projects that have benefited both organizations and their respective communities,” says Beacon Health System Board Chairman Don Krabill. “Both organizations share a common vision to create an integrated health care system that delivers the highest quality care and the absolute best patient experience.”

“Nearly 1,000 highly-skilled, well-trained physicians serve on the medical staff at Elkhart General and Memorial Hospital combined. This shared medical expertise will enable us to attract even more specialized clinicians to the area and produce the region’s highest quality of care,” says Philip A. Newbold, Chief Executive Officer of Beacon Health System.

Together, both organizations employ more than 6,000 team members and volunteers; operate more than 1,000 hospital beds and are staffed by nearly 1,000 physicians. Each year, approximately 4,500 babies are delivered at both hospitals. And both have provided exceptional regional health care for more than a century.

Elkhart General and Memorial Hospital have achieved national recognition for quality care over the past 20 years, including cardiac care, spine surgery and safety; and both hospitals are the Consumer Choice hospitals in their respective counties.

In celebration of this historic moment in the Michiana landscape, officials at Beacon Health System have decided to fund field trips to HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum for the more than 5,200 students in first and third grades in Elkhart Community Schools and South Bend Community School Corporation for 2012.
