Adult Medicine Curriculum- Teaching Medicine Chief
Overview:
Residents act as teaching chief of service in PGY-4 as a part of the Health Services Management (HSM) Curriculum. The other adult medicine experiences have distinct curricula.
Goal:
The teaching chief of adult medicine service rotation shall provide the advanced level HSM resident with the opportunity to broaden his/her skills in teaching less experienced learners in the acute care hospital setting.
Objectives:
While serving as the teaching chief, the resident:
* is able to analyze current medical literature as it relates to a specific patient and present this information to less experienced learners in a succinct and clinically relevant manner. (PBLI)
* is able to recognize areas of particular difficulty in learning among members of the medicine team and enhance the learner's understanding of these medical areas. ( SBP )
* is able to effectively communicate with learners and convey medical information relevant to currently hospitalized patients. (ICS)
* recognizes the necessity of appropriate consultation and the limits of the scope of Family Medicine and conveys these to learners on the medicine service. ( SBP )
Implementation:
Educational Methods
The teaching chief rotation is a unique opportunity for residents who are experienced at caring for hospitalized patients to enhance their teaching skills. The teaching chief attends daily rounds and is familiar with the patients on the medicine service. While the teaching chief has no direct patient care, it is his or her responsibility to present daily teaching points on topics relevant to the patients discussed in rounds. It is expected that the teaching chief will research the current medical literature and give succinct presentations at rounds. Additionally, the teaching chief may meet with learners outside of formal rounds to review cases and teaching concepts.
The chief is directly supervised by board certified attending physicians in Family Medicine and/or Internal Medicine. Details of the medicine service are outlined in the inpatient medicine curriculum.
Resident Responsibilities
The teaching chief of service responsibilities include:
* Attending morning rounds daily Monday through Friday
* Scheduling and providing educational sessions related to current patient concerns and commonly encountered inpatient adult medical problems
* Understanding and complying with the ACGME work hour restrictions
Resources

Methods of Evaluation :
Each supervising physician completes a rotation evaluation for each resident teaching chief. This evaluation is meant to be a summative evaluation of the direct observation of the performance of the resident during the rotation. Each resident will receive an evaluation from an average of 2 attending physicians for each ½ block.
