Noon Conference Curriculum
Overview:
The noon conference curriculum of the Memorial Hospital Family Medicine Residency is a daily schedule of learning activities that includes didactic presentations, interactive sessions, small group learning, and case presentations. Presenters vary by topic and include family physician residents and attendings, medical and surgical specialty attendings, and non-physician experts in topics relevant to the education of family medicine residents. While direct patient care is the primary method by which residents are educated, it is understood that some topics are enhanced by formal didactic presentation and that other topics are infrequently encountered in daily patient care. These educational opportunities serve as a supplement to direct patient care and are expected to cover topics that are not frequently encountered in direct patient care or serve to enhance the educational experience residents receive in caring for patients.
Goal:
Noon conference will provide a structured learning environment to insure that residents receive comprehensive education on topics relevant to the specialty of family medicine.
Implementation:
Noon conference will occur on a daily basis, Monday through Friday from noon to 1, and is a required activity for residents and faculty. A monthly schedule will be developed by the vice-chief resident in consultation with residents and faculty based on the scheduling guidelines included in this document. A minority of conferences will be presented by residents and faculty physicians will attend each conference presented by a resident. Residents are required to present case presentations as outlined in this document and described in the curricula for those rotations.

Case Presentation Priorities
As noted above, the noon conference curriculum includes case conferences from resident experiences on the inpatient service rotations, i.e. internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics. As part of the overall program emphasis on the early development of a resident's ability to collect, interpret, and prioritize information about a patient's illness, to draw diagnostic conclusions from such information, to meaningfully and succinctly convey this information to staff attendings and specialists, and to reflect upon and reinterpret the information subsequent to the patient's hospital course and to teach others based on this experience, this curriculum reflects the priorities for resident case presentations. It is acknowledged by the program and the faculty that this represents a strong preference, not an absolute requirement, for the case numbers presented herein.

Cases Cases Cases
PGY-1 4 2 1
PGY-2 2 1 1
PGY-3 * 1 #
*PGY-3 residents, because of their role as chief of the medicine service, do not present a case, but serve as coordinator of cases presented by PGY-1 and PGY-2 residents during the time they served as chief. In addition, they do a journal club article presentation and a geriatrics presentation at noon conference instead.
#PGY-3 residents may present an OB case at their request or may be asked to present one if other presenters are unavailable.
Evaluation:
Residents are asked to evaluate the quality and content of noon conference at least semi-annually and these responses influence the selection of subsequent schedules and speakers.
Conferences presented by a resident will be evaluated by a faculty member using the standard presentation evaluation form.
