Now I See You

Several times a week, infants are transferred from their birth hospital to the Memorial’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Memorial’s NICU is the regional referral center for ten other institutions in north central Indiana and a portion of southwestern Michigan.

While the child is receiving the best possible care, the mother may be recovering at the hospital where she delivered, unable to join her child until she is healthy enough to travel. The Now I See YouTM program helps bring these mothers and children closer together.

Since July 2009, Now I See You enables mothers to view their children and communicate “face-to-face” with their Memorial caregivers via a Webcam system. The laptop-based cameras give mothers the peace of mind to recover their own health before rushing to their baby.

“Several mothers have been moved to tears,” said Robert White, M.D., medical director of the NICU. “It is such a difficult experience for them to be separated from their baby and to imagine their infant as critically ill, so seeing their baby active and beautiful, even when they require considerable medical support, provides relief and joy that no amount of words or still pictures could do.”
