America's Promise – The Alliance for Youth

As our children continue to grow up in a progressively challenging world, we look to the future with new areas of focus for health promotion in the schools and after-school programs. The following Memorial Hospital & Health System youth-serving programs are working toward fulfilling the five promises: Caring Adults, Safe Places, Healthy Start, Marketable Skills and Opportunities to Serve.

Baby Think It Over

A three-part program that provides an experience for young adults that simulates the parenting of an infant. It also explores the emotional, financial and social consequences of teen parenting.

Baby & Wristbands

The baby has a lifelike vinyl body and weighs about 7 pounds. It is anatomically correct and plays a recording of a real infant crying. It’s tamper resistant and monitors total stimulation time, rough handling, neglect and total crying time. There are easy, normal and cranky temperament settings. The wristbands ensure that only the assigned teen takes care of the baby.

Equipment

Adding accessories like a diaper bag and car seat make the parenting simulation even more realistic.

Activities and Assignments

These include keeping a diary, completing budget worksheets, and utilizing speakers who can be included before, during and after the parenting simulation.
