What is Brain Health?
Everything you are and everything you do is controlled by your brain. Your brain used to be thought of as a static object, unable to grow or develop its capacity or performance much after adolescence. Now, we know that under certain conditions your brain will continue to make new neuron connections and grow to operate at its best.
At BrainWorks, a Brain Healthy Lifestyle is made up of three primary categories: Physical Health, Brain Fitness, and Vitality.
Physical Health is how you take care of our body. Your brain requires 25% of the blood that is pumped by your heart. The healthier your heart is, the healthier your brain will be. Taking good care of your physical health also means eating well, and understanding what foods best support your brain and your body. Getting enough sleep is also an important factor for your physical health, as is addressing items that may create stress for you.
Are you ready to get started or take it to the next level? Call BrainWorks! We’ll help you design the right program for your specific needs.
Brain Fitness, also called cognitive fitness, is how your mind works in four key areas: attention, perception, thinking and language. In this area of brain health, the goal is to routinely engage in learning challenging new activities. The more novel and complex, the better they are for your brain’s ability to create those important connections.
There are many fun and creative forms of Brain Fitness. Learning new things through classes in music, art, language, cooking, and dance are just a few. Engaging in activities that require you to coordinate your mind and body movements with others, or to the beat of music, or in response to stimulation are great neuro-pathway builders.
Many online brain training tools are available. While practicing and playing these games are generally considered to be good for your brain health, they are just one element of the big picture.
Need help selecting the right cognitive fitness program for your life? Call BrainWorks! We’ll help you sort through the right choice for your lifestyle.
Vitality is how we feel about our lives in the bigger sense of the world. Living vibrant, stimulating lives that feel purposeful and fulfilling create the conditions in which your brain prospers and is able to remain strong and resilient.
Vitality has many meanings. At BrainWorks, vitality includes having a sense of purpose and passion about how you spend your time. It includes having meaningful relationships, whether they are with friends, family, school, and community; through work, or even through your faith-based community and social circles.
Living with vitality requires that we understand and know how to navigate the changes and surprises that arrive in our lives. It means that we re-invent ourselves at some of the expected and unexpected turning points and find ways to keep ourselves centered, connected, and filled with energy to go out there and explore and experience the world.
