Breast Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to record an image on a special screen. Radiologists can distinguish fluid-filled cysts from solid masses with 98-100 percent accuracy. After placing a gel on your breast to help transmit sound waves, the technologist moves a transducer (the instrument that produces the sound waves) across the breast to produce a picture of the breast tissue on a screen. An ultrasound takes approximately 30 minutes.

The American College of Radiology states that whole breast ultrasound is NOT the standard of care for a breast screening tool. Studies have shown that mammography is the best tool for breast cancer screening. The indications for a breast ultrasound are a palpable abnormality or to further evaluate an abnormality on a mammogram.

The Memorial Regional Breast Care Center has experienced ultrasound technologists and is nationally accredited by the American College of Radiology for performing breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided procedures.
