Recommended Breast Screening Guidelines for Women

Puberty to Age 49

  • Monthly breast self-examination
  • Annual breast examination by a physician or trained health professional
  • Women between ages 40 and 49 should have a mammogram every year, depending on their physician’s recommendation

Women 50 Years and Older

  • Monthly breast self-examination
  • Annual breast examination by a physician or trained health professional
  • Annual screening mammogram.

For women who have a first degree relative (mother, sister or daughter) diagnosed with breast cancer at an early age, they should speak with their physicians and may want to start having mammograms 10 years earlier than when their first degree relative was diagnosed. (Example: If mother was diagnosed at 34 years of age, the daughter of the mother with breast cancer may want to have their first mammogram at 24 years of age.)
