NCAST Teaching Scale Results

The NCAST teaching scale was generally administered as a "pretest" for the DDSTII. Post-testing was not possible in the majority of cases due to families leaving the Center. The findings indicate the average scores for response to distress, cognitive growth fostering and responsiveness to the caregiver were less than ½ of the possible points available. The significance of the contingency items in this particular area point directly to the child's learned inability to respond to their caregiver due to the caregivers pattern of negative or ineffective response to their child. These results certainly highlight concerns related to the caregivers abilities to recognize and support their child's development. Analyzing the results of the DDSTII and the NCAST Teaching Scale enables both Memorial Hospital and the Center for the Homeless staff to further define the type of support and intervention each child and family needs and deserves.
