Dale A. Patterson, M.D., FAAFP – Program Director

As Director, Dr. Patterson leads the faculty team in planning and implementing the goals of the residency program. After completing his residency training and serving as Chief Resident at Memorial, Dr. Patterson served in the U.S. Air Force and taught at a military and a civilian residency program. He returned to Memorial and joined the faculty in 2007. He maintains a practice at the E. Blair Warner Family Medicine Center.

Dr. Patterson has authored several book chapters and articles. He is an editor for the third edition of Pfenninger and Fowler’s Procedures for Primary Care. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association for Primary Care Endoscopy as secretary/treasurer. He enjoys marathon running and coaching his kid’s track and baseball teams. He and his wife Amy have a son and a daughter.

Dr. Sutula joined the program in 1993 and is a Team Leader in the Family Practice Center. He has extensive experience with both emergency and occupational medicine. In addition, he teaches two graduate level courses at Indiana University at South Bend, "Health Services Delivery and the Law," and "Principle of Health Systems Mangement and Policy Development."

Dr. Sutula and his wife, Nanci, have five children and live in the country near Bristol, IN. He is also the head baseball coach at Holy Cross College.

Anton Crepinsek, M.D.

Dr. Crepinsek came to the Family Medicine Residency Program after five years of military medicine in the U.S. Air Force and 16 years of private practice, which included obstetrics. He has a special interest in dermatology and pediatrics.

He is an avid runner and has run several marathons. He is also one of the elders of his church where he teaches and conducts biblical counseling.

Kenneth Elek, M.D., FAAFP

Dr. Elek joined the Family Medicine Residency Program in December 1997, after 12½ years in group practice at Ireland Road Medical Group. Over the 13 years he worked full time at the residency program, he led the implementation of the electronic health record and numerous other technological advances. He continues to teach as a faculty member, in addition to his primary role as Chief Medical Information Officer for Memorial Health System. He represents the residency program and the health system in the community with a weekly call-in television spot and is active in the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians as the Speaker of the Congress of Delegates. Dr. Elek as serves as the Chief of the Family Medicine Department at Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Elek enjoys basketball and golf and is active in his church. He and his wife Linda have three adult children. The Eleks are lifelong residents of South Bend.

As Director of Memorial Sports Medicine Institute and Co-Director of the South Bend Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship, Dr. Lavallee leads the sports medicine team of fellows, athletic trainers and support staff in planning and implementing of our fellowship goals. Dr. Lavallee maintains a limited clinical family practice and a more extensive sports medicine practice at the Sports Medicine Institute at the Memorial Leighton HealthPlex.

Dr. Lavallee enjoys distance swimming, weightlifting, Willys Jeeps, coaching soccer, his involvements with the scouting movement, and spending time with his wife, Tara, and his two sons, Tommy and Sean.

After 15 years in private practice in the South Bend community, Dr. Dunfee joined the faculty in June 2002. Her areas of expertise include sexual dysfunction, anxiety, depression and health psychology.

In addition to a limited clinical practice, she teaches interpersonal communication skills and the diagnosis and treatment of psychological issues. She also serves as a resource for residents as they face the stresses of training.

Dr. Dunfee and her husband, Joe, live in South Bend and enjoy golf, travel and time with their children.

A member of the faculty since 1994, Dr. Lewis serves as the clinic director of the E.Blair Warner Family Medicine Center, the residency ambulatory care clinic. She has special interests in preventive medicine and women's health care. She especially enjoys teaching clinical skills and procedures. As an osteopathic physician, Dr. Lewis strongly supports a holistic approach to both patient care and residency training.

Dr. Lewis, her husband, Dr. Mark Lewis (an OB/GYN in the community) and their daughter enjoy spending time with family, travel, exercise and laughter.

Eli Opacich, PharmD

Eli Opacich, PharmD – Pharmacotherapy Educator

Dr. Opacich started as a clinical pharmacist at Memorial Hospital of South Bend in 2008. He is involved with committees such as Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Infection Control, Critical Care and Anticoagulation. In the summer of 2009, he launched the Memorial Hospital Outpatient Anticoagulation Clinic and serves as the supervising clinician. Dr. Opacich enjoys teaching and is a preceptor for Purdue University pharmacy students and other schools. He has been involved in education with pharmacists and nurses, and he now serves as pharmacotherapy educator for the residency program.

Dr. Opacich enjoys basketball, table tennis, travel and leisure. He and his wife have two beautiful daughters.

Dr. Riley served as Program Director from 1992-2010, overseeing the Memorial program during a period of great growth and success. He now focuses on his passion for teaching and remains active in the hands-on teaching of residents and students in multiple settings. In addition, he appears frequently in local television spots and serves on the American Board of Family Medicine’s In-Training Examination and Geriatrics Test Committees.

Dr. Riley is an avid symphonic and rock trombonist and enjoys long distance hiking and musical arranging. He and his wife, Lee, have two adult children.

Randall J. Suttor, M.D. – Associate Director

Dr. Suttor joined the faculty in 1999. Prior to becoming a faculty member, Dr. Suttor was in a busy rural practice for 10 years. He is involved in the prenatal and obstetrics curriculum and performs obstetrical ultrasounds. He also enjoys teaching procedures, such as vasectomy and colonoscopy. He is a certified Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) instructor.

Dr. Suttor is interested in tropical medicine and in public health in underdeveloped countries, having served in the past as a medical missionary. He coordinates the elective international rotations and continues to enjoy traveling and working abroad.

Dr. Suttor is active in his church, enjoys bicycling, water sports, scuba and woodworking. He and his wife, Bonnie, have three sons and a daughter.

Dr. Zeller joined the faculty in 2010. After completing his residency, he spent one year in private practice in Plymouth, IN. His clinical interests include inpatient medicine, obstetrics, sports medicine and dermatology.

Dr. Zeller and his wife, Julie, have four children. He is active in his local church, enjoys spending time with his family, and also finds time to run, cycle and read.
