Memorial Senior Services housed in The Leighton Center at 534 North Michigan Street, opened in May of 1991 to assist community seniors in enhancing their quality of life by offering health promotion and wellness programs.  Among the many programs offered are:

Computer Classes - The Leighton Computer Learning Center is one of 120 SeniorNet sites across the country.  Courses are designed and instructed by seniors and offered throughout the year.  Most courses are $25 for members and $35 for non-members.

Emotional Wellness - Discussion groups and programs developed and conducted by licensed social workers. Includes personal growth groups, interactive seminars, and spiritual eldering work.

sscatlady.jpg (7457 bytes)Support Groups - Various support groups that are open to the public meet at Leighton Center, such as Alzheimer's, Bone Marrow, Cancer, Diabetes, NIILS, Ostomy, Parkinson's, Self-Help for the Hard of Hearing, Women's Cancer, and Women in Touch.

Volunteer Opportunities - Many exciting opportunities are available at Leighton Center, Memorial Hospital and the community. Just to list a few: receptionists, librarians, computer instructors, friendly visitors, kids at heart, data entry, reminiscing and speakers bureau.

Resource Library - Circulation and reference library with video-tapes, books, magazines, and pamphlets for the public and professionals dealing with all aspects of aging and information related to health, caregiving, leisure activities, emotional health, and relationships.

ss-bakingcookies.jpg (8985 bytes)Health Education Programs - Lecture series and workshops on a variety of topics designed to help seniors and their caregivers better understand their own responsibilities and assist them in taking a proactive stance in making wise healthcare decisions.

Demonstration Kitchen - Available for classes on nutrition, loweringcholesterol, lowering sodium intake, late onset diabetes, and cooking for one.

Information and Referral - Helps link seniors, their caregivers, and their healthcare providers with local, regional, and national resources needed to maintain their quality of life.

Sage-ing Center® - Provides opportunities for elders to develop their full potential as they move into the later years of their lives. The spiritual eldering process includes affirming the importance of the elder years, harvesting the wisdom of our lives and serving as an Elder to others.
