Massage
Therapy

Certified massage therapists are available for massage
throughout the week at the Health & Lifestyle Center. You do
not need to be a member to receive massage therapy. Choose from
several types of massage, from relaxation to sports massage or
a combination of techniques.
Scheduling Massage Therapy
Call 647-2655, to schedule your massage or inquire about
rates. Massages can be scheduled for as little as 15 minutes (chair
massage) to 1½ hours.
Types of Massage:
Swedish Massage – The most common type of massage. A system
of long strokes, kneading and friction techniques on the more superficial
layers of the muscles, combined with active and passive movements
of the joints. Promotes relaxation and stress relief, improves
blood circulation and range of motion, and relieves muscle tension.
Medical Massage – This type of massage usually intends to
treat specific musculoskeletal problems; it is not a relaxation
massage. Employs myofascial release. Focuses attention to the joint
complexes and ligaments of the shoulders, hips and neck using techniques
that apply physical force to the muscle attachment. Uses the bones
to apply traction, torque, shaking and folding.
Sports Massage – A deep-tissue massage based on Swedish
massage techniques. It focuses on muscle groups relevant to a particular
sport. Therapists may perform passive stretching exercises on client.
Lomi Lomi Massage -- This ancient form of Hawaiian deep massage
incorporates long, weaving, rhythmic strokes. Lomi-Lomi (LOH-me
LOH-me) is particularly good for relaxation, stress relief, lymphatic
drainage and mild pain. Specific areas also can be targeted.
Hot Stone Massage -- Feel your tensions melt away with the application
of warm, smooth basalt stones on specific areas of your body. Gentle
massage with the stones combined with aromatherapy and therapeutic
oils helps to balance the body’s energy centers while soothing
away stresses. The gentle pressure with the warm stones helps prepare
the muscles for deeper, more penetrating massage.
Trigger Point Therapy – Applies concentrated finger pressure
to “trigger points” (painful, irritated areas in muscles)
to break spasm and/or pain.
Cranio-Sacral – A technique for finding and correcting
cerebral and spinal imbalances or blockages that may cause sensory,
motor
or intellectual dysfunction.
Healing Touch & Reiki – These techniques help to balance
the energy centers in the body. Used for pain management, trauma
and injuries.
Reflexology – A massage technique that stimulates points in the
hands and feet thought to correspond or “reflex” to
other areas of the body.
