As
Director, Dr. Riley leads the faculty team in planning
and implementing residency goals and objectives. He
represents the program to the hospital administration
and to the community, appearing frequently in local
television spots. Dr. Riley maintains a limited clinical
practice and remains active in the hands-on teaching
of residents in all settings. Dr. Riley serves on
the on the American Board of Family Medicine’s
In-Training Examination Committee and chairs its Geriatrics
Test Committee.
Dr. Riley is an avid trombonist and guitar player,
and enjoys long distance hiking, chess, and computers.
He and his wife, Lee, have two adult children.

Dr.
Sutula joined the program in 1993 and is a Team Leader
in the Family Practice Center. He has extensive experience
with both emergency and occupational medicine. In
addition he teaches two graduate level courses at
Indiana University at South Bend, "Health Services
Delivery and the Law," and " Principle of
Health Systems Mangement and Policy Development."
Dr. Sutula and
his wife, Nanci, have 5 children and live in the country
near Bristol, IN.
Kenneth

Dr.
Elek joined the residency in December 1997 after 12-1/2
years in group practice at Ireland Road Medical Group.
His primary responsibilities are the technological
and procedural aspects of the E. Blair Warner Family
Medicine Center — the residency’s ambulatory
care center — and direction of these aspects
of residency training. He represents the program to
the community with a weekly call-in television spot
and is active in the IAFP as the Speaker of the Congress
of Delegates. He is the Chief of the Family Medicine
Department at Memorial Hospital for 2008. He and his
wife accompanied a task force from Bethel College
in Mishawaka to Romania for 2 weeks in May 2005.
Dr. Elek enjoys basketball and golf and is active in his church. He and his wife, Linda, have three adult boys. The Eleks are lifelong residents of South Bend.

As Director of Memorial Sports Medicine Institute and Co-Director of the South Bend Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship, Dr. Lavallee leads the sports medicine team of fellows, athletic trainers, and support staff in planning and implementing of our fellowship goals. Dr. Lavallee maintains a limited clinical family practice and a more extensive sports medicine practice at the Sports Medicine Institute at the Memorial Leighton HealthPlex.
Dr. Lavallee is an avid weightlifter, restoring old jeeps, and spending time with his wife, Tara and his two sons Tommy and Sean.
Kelly

Dr. Derbin joined the faculty in 2002. Her prior teaching experience involves all levels of learners in both university and community training settings.
Dr. Derbin incorporates maternity
care into her practice. Her special clinical interests
include women’s and children’s health.
She is a certified Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics
(ALSO) instructor. Dr. Derbin serves on the committee
that annually reviews the American Board of Family
Medicine board certification examination.
Dr. Derbin enjoys cooking, exercise, trying new cuisines and traveling.
Joyce Dunfee, PhD - Director, Behavioral Science

After 15 years in private practice in the South Bend community, Dr. Dunfee joined the faculty in June, 2002. Her areas of expertise include sexual dysfunction, anxiety, depression and health psychology.
In addition to a limited clinical practice, she teaches interpersonal communication skills and the diagnosis and treatment of psychological issues. She also serves as a resource for residents as they face the stresses of training.
Dr. Dunfee and her husband, Joe, live in South Bend and enjoy golf, travel and time with their children.

Dr. Henderson rejoined the Family Medicine Residency Program after five years of full-time private practice. Her special interests include nutrition, developmental pediatrics and international medicine with trips to Haiti and Nicaragua.
Dr. Henderson enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters. She enjoys gardening, running, travel, and restoring her 120 year old home in South Bend.

A member of the faculty since 1994, Dr.
Lewis serves as the clinic director of the E.Blair
Warner Family Medicine Center, the residency ambulatory
care clinic. She has special interests in preventive
medicine and women's health care. She especially enjoys
teaching clinical skills and procedures. As an osteopathic
physician, Dr. Lewis strongly supports a holistic
approach to both patient care and residency training.
Dr. Lewis, her husband, Dr. Mark Lewis (an OB/GYN in the community) and their daughter enjoy spending time with family, travel, exercise and laughter.

Dr. McAward joined the faculty in 2005 after completing his sports medicine fellowship. He works with Dr. Lavallee at the Memorial Leighton Healthplex Sports Medicine Institute, where he practices both sports and family medicine.
Dr. McAward
is a diehard sports fan of most any type of athletic
activity. He also enjoys traveling and planning residency
social gatherings. Dr. McAward and his wife Jen, were
recently married in September 2007.

Dr. Patterson joined the faculty in 2007. After completing his residency training, Dr. Patterson taught residents and students both on active duty in the United States Air Force and at a civilian residency program. His interests include inpatient medicine, obstetrics and procedures including endoscopy.
Dr. Patterson
has authored several book chapters and articles. He
is an editor for the third edition of Pfenninger and
Fowler’s Procedures for Primary Care.
Dr. Patterson enjoys triathlon, marathon running, and coaching his kid’s teams. He and his wife, Amy, have a son and a daughter.
Dr. Smith has recently joined the faculty in 2006 with a special interest in infectious disease. She shares her time working with the residents in both inpatient and outpatient settings and maintains her clinical practice at the hospital. She enjoys teaching and interacting with the residents and staff.
Shelly likes to spend her free time running, reading and gardening. She enjoys most sports and loves to spend time with her husband, Brian, and her two toddler sons, Zhane and Mason.
Randall J. Suttor, M.D. - Associate Director

Dr. Suttor joined the faculty in 1999. Prior to becoming a faculty member, Dr. Suttor was in a busy rural practice for ten years. He is involved in the prenatal and obstetrics curriculum and does obstetrical ultrasounds. He also enjoys teaching procedures such as vasectomy and colonoscopy. He is a certified Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) instructor.
Dr. Suttor is interested in tropical medicine and in public health in underdeveloped countries, having served in the past as a medical missionary. He coordinates the elective international rotations and continues to enjoy traveling and working abroad.
Dr. Suttor is active in his church, enjoys bicycling, water sports, scuba, and woodworking. He and his wife, Bonnie, have three sons and a daughter.
